A rich, chocolatey base paired with the sweet, molasses-kissed flavor of butterscotch, all topped with ooey-gooey marshmallows—this indulgent holiday drink is the perfect companion for your favorite festive movies.

Homemade butterscotch hot chocolate mix in bottles with marshmallows—easy holiday gift idea or winter drink recipe.

Hot chocolate has to be one of my all-time favorite holiday drinks. Whether it's loaded with pillowy marshmallows or spiked with a splash of spiced rum, there's just something about it that instantly makes everything feel a little cozier. Growing up, it was always the drink of choice on a cold winter’s day—snuggled up in front of the TV, wrapped in a blanket, watching our favorite holiday movies.

This particular version of hot chocolate was inspired by one of my best friends, who is absolutely obsessed with butterscotch. During her pregnancy, she would constantly talk about her love for butterscotch ice cream—usually while sipping on a steaming mug of hot chocolate. It was one of those simple moments, filled with laughter and comfort, that sparked the idea for this delicious twist: butterscotch hot chocolate.

It starts with a rich, chocolatey base that’s perfectly complemented by the sweet, molasses-y flavor of butterscotch. And of course, no cup would be complete without a generous topping of ooey-gooey marshmallows. The result? A decadent, heartwarming drink that tastes like the holidays in a mug.

Whether you're binge-watching festive classics, hosting a holiday movie night, or just craving something warm and indulgent, this butterscotch hot chocolate is the perfect companion. So go ahead—grab your coziest blanket, pick your favorite film, and treat yourself.

Here’s my recipe for the perfect hot chocolate mix to enjoy all season long.

Ingredients

• ½ cup granulated sugar

• ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

• ½ cup skim milk powder

• ⅓ cup dark chocolate chunks + mini butterscotch chips (You can leave out the butterscotch chips or substitute for any other flavor you like. Just be sure to not exceed ⅓ as this will make the hot chocolate excessively sweet)

• ⅓ cup marshmallows (I used the minis)

Directions

To make the hot chocolate, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, milk powder, and chocolate chunks. Add in about 3 to 4 tablespoons of the mix to one cup of hot water. Top with marshmallows and whip cream and enjoy!
